Marina Provides Serious Challenge to Griffens
2/4/2011
Marina was beaten yesterday in a close match and tough battle through two overtime periods against Los Alamitos. Marina's defense held Los Alamitos off for the entire first half. Arianna Sisson made some remarkable saves to hold off the Griffens, while the rest of the team brought on the pressure and remained in possession of the ball and on the attack for most of the half. In the 62nd minute, Erin Huff knocked a ball in over the keeper to put Marina ahead 1-0. In the final 10 minutes, Los Alamitos received a free kick just outside the 18 that set them up for a play that eventually led to a goal. Marina fought on and after Los Alamitos received a red card for aggressive and unsportsmanlike conduct, the Griffens put another ball in off a free kick play and followup. The Vikings fought hard, played well, remained classy and kept their heads to push on but eventually fall just short of a win or tie. The match was a nail-biter to the very end and both teams exhibited talent and organized play.

| Congratulations to the,Varsity girls, for defeating Huntington Beach High School on Tuesday night, with a score of 1-0! In the first half of the game both teams seemed to have about 50% ball control. Marina had 2 corner kicks against the Oilers but were unable to score. With 3 shots on goal, and one failed attempt, the Vikings came up unlucky in the first half. In the second half of the game, the Lady Vikings were able to dominate the field and capped off the game with a fantastic shot on goal by freshman Kayla Perry for the exciting 1-0 victory.
